Mr. Banjoist, Vince Bartlebaugh

About Vince

Vince Bartlebaugh, Blue Shades band member 2003 thru 2011. Vince was a dynamic force in Blue Shades from the time he came onboard in 2003 until he was forced to leave due to an accident in 2011. Accordingly, we thought it appropriate to include this information. Great strides musically were made with the band during his time, and it would not have been the same band without him. A seasoned musician, Vince has been playing guitar since the early age of nine. He moved on to the five string in 1961. Since then he has become a virtual master of the Mastertone. In addition to his work with the "five", he has composed several numbers, two of which are featured on the bands second project. "Catawba" an instrumental and "The Room In My Mind", a vocal number. He has others just waiting to be recorded and has re-written versions or added verses and breaks to many well known bluegrass standards. Vince also works as a private instructor. Vince was a founding member of the band "TRUE BLUEGRASS", along with the late Bob Thompson. It was in this band that he mentored current Blue Shades guitarist Brad Foust. True Bluegrass was well known and active in southwest Pennsylvania in the late 1960's through the early 80's, and produced one recording project self titled "True Bluegrass". Due to popular demand it has been re-issued many times, and is available from Blue Shades. During the winter of 2010 / 2011 Vince injured a finger on his left hand, and he felt it had affected his ability to perform to the high standard he was accustomed to. It was his decision in 2011 to step down as Blue Shades banjoist. It was a tough loss. Vince is well known and respected in bluegrass music, and has been an influence on many of our regions great banjo players, of which we are blessed. We wish him the very best.
